WordPress or a custom website — which is right for you?
Most business sites do not need custom code. Some do. Here is how to tell which group you are in.
When WordPress (or Joomla) is the better choice
- You want to edit text, photos and blog posts yourself.
- You need a standard feature set: contact forms, galleries, SEO tools, a small shop.
- You want lower build cost and a large pool of developers who can maintain it later.
- Your site is mainly content: services, products, news.
The trade-off is that popular platforms attract attackers. A WordPress or Joomla site needs updates, a firewall and backups, or it will be broken into sooner or later. This is not a reason to avoid them; it is a reason to budget for maintenance.
When custom code is worth it
- Your business runs on a workflow no plugin matches: bookings with unusual rules, quotations, dealer portals, internal dashboards.
- You need integrations with accounting, ERP or government systems.
- You expect heavy traffic or very specific performance needs.
- You want the smallest possible attack surface.
Custom work costs more to build and depends on the person or studio that wrote it, so insist on source files, documentation and ownership in your name.
Speed and SEO
Speed depends far more on how a site is built than on the platform. A light theme and compressed images on WordPress beat a bloated custom site every time. Search ranking comes from useful content, clean structure and local signals — not from the choice of CMS.
A simple way to decide
If you can describe your site as pages, posts and forms, use a CMS. If you describe it with the words 'portal', 'login', 'workflow' or 'integration', talk about custom development. If you are unsure, tell us what the site must do and we will tell you honestly which fits — see WordPress development or custom web applications.
Frequently asked questions
Is WordPress secure enough for a business website?
Yes, if it is kept updated, uses reputable plugins only, has a firewall and backups, and avoids pirated themes. Neglected WordPress sites are the problem, not the platform.
Is a custom website faster than WordPress?
Not automatically. A well-built WordPress site can be very fast, and a poorly built custom site can be slow.
Can I move from WordPress to custom later?
Yes. Content can be migrated, but it is a project in itself, so choose carefully at the start.
