Domain name and hosting: what you need to buy
Two things keep a website online: a domain name (the address) and hosting (the place the files live). Mixing them up is how businesses end up locked out of their own site.
The difference
The domain name is the address people type, like yourbusiness.in. Hosting is the server that stores your website, email and database. You pay for each separately, usually once a year, and they can be with different companies.
Choosing a domain name
- Keep it short, easy to say on the phone and easy to spell.
- .com is the safest default internationally; .in is trusted for Indian businesses and is often more available.
- Avoid hyphens and numbers if you can.
- Check that the name does not infringe someone else's trademark.
Always own both in your name
Whoever registered the domain is its legal owner. If an agency registered it in their name, they can hold the site hostage or sell it. Ask for the registrant details to show your business name and your email, and keep the login yourself. The same applies to hosting accounts.
What to check in hosting
- Who runs the servers and who you contact when something breaks.
- Free SSL, daily backups, and business email on your own domain.
- A current PHP version and enough resources for your traffic.
- Free or assisted migration if you are moving from another host.
- Renewal price — some plans cost much more after the first year.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy my domain and hosting from the same company?
It is convenient, but not required. What matters is that both accounts are in your name and you hold the logins.
Is .in or .com better for a Dehradun business?
Both work. Choose the one that gives you a short, memorable name; if you serve only India, .in is perfectly fine.
Can I move my website to a different host later?
Yes. Your files, database and email can be migrated, and a good host will help you do so.
